The Secret Confessions of Recruiters

Ever wondered what happens to your resume after you hit submit?

I had my favorite NYC recruiters spill the tea. Most of them added vodka.

We spend less than 3 seconds looking at a resume while sifting through a pile, 30 seconds before a phone screen, and less than 3 minutes when reviewing it in final rounds.

A lot of times, we just look at a title, company, dates, and first bullet before moving on, so candidates should make their first bullet a strong, yet brief overview of their role.

If a resume is 2+ pages and you’ve been working less than a decade, we’ll throw it out. If we don’t like the format, we’ll delete it. If it’s unclear what you do, consider it tossed.

Most recruiters don’t properly utilize the back end of their ATS, so don’t get too fixated on stuffing keywords. Build your resume for a person, because that’s most likely who is reading it, albeit very quickly.

Adding a lot of color and design is distracting and conveys that the experience is not impressive enough on its own. If you want to highlight your creativity, build a portfolio.

Very few applicants directly message us or hiring manager after submitting their resume. Sending a quick note on LinkedIn isn’t annoying, it actually makes our job easier. We love a brief and creative LinkedIn DM slide!

Adding your desired title to your header is the easiest way to get into the initial “yes" pile. Personal or objective statements are just so 2005. No one read them then, and we certainly won’t ready them now.

Including a headshot on a resume that has nothing to do with your looks will make us not take you seriously, no matter how hot you are. Same goes for ‘cute’ layouts and too many icons.

We’re on the candidate’s team and want them to succeed — that’s what we’re hired to do! We’re often happy to debrief between rounds and guide them with two-sided transparency.
